Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has claimed that the “satanic lie” of a 1966 Igbo-led coup was used to justify his client’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Ejimakor wrote:
“In 1966, the satanic lie of an “Igbo coup” was concocted to justify the pogrom against Ndigbo.
“In 2017, a similar lie was used to tag Ndigbo as terrorists, using IPOB as a cover; and in 2021, it was used to justify the rendition of MAZI NNAMDI KANU. Ndigbo must put a stop to this.”
Kanu had fled Nigeria in 2017 after the military launched Operation Python Dance, which targeted his residence in Afaraukwu, Abia State. However, in 2021, he was forcibly returned to Nigeria under controversial circumstances.
Since then, courts have discharged and acquitted him of all charges, yet the Nigerian government has refused to release him.
In January 2025, Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court indefinitely adjourned Kanu’s case following his request for her recusal from the trial.
Kanu’s continued detention has fueled tensions and calls for his release, particularly from pro-Biafra supporters and human rights activists.
