The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a convicted Boko Haram member, Alkali Yarima, also known as La’ari, to death by hanging for his role in the 2015 attacks on Maiduguri, Borno State.
Justice James Omotosho delivered the judgment on Friday, convicting Yarima on a seven-count terrorism charge brought by the Federal Government. The court also imposed multiple prison terms on the other counts, including life imprisonment for receiving arms and weapons training in preparation for terrorist acts.
According to the ruling, Yarima was sentenced to life imprisonment on count six, which involved travelling to an Arab country for training on arms and weapon handling. He received 35 years imprisonment on count one for professing membership of the proscribed Boko Haram terrorist organisation between 2009 and 2015. He was further handed a 30-year term on count five and 10 years each on counts two, three, and four.
The death sentence was pronounced on the final count, which accused him of participating in the deadly 2015 attacks on Maiduguri. The charges were filed under various sections of the Terrorism (Prevention Amendment) Act, 2013.
Yarima, identified with chest number 1636 from the Lawanti area of Mafa Local Government Area in Borno State, was alleged to have accepted “Da’awah” from Boko Haram founder Mohammed Yusuf and continued his affiliation with the group until his arrest.
The trial, originally slated for Kainji in Niger State, was transferred to Abuja. The Federal Government’s prosecution team was led by Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, alongside Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN.
Speaking after the judgment, Fagbemi reiterated the government’s resolve to combat terrorism. “We will fight with every inch of our blood to ensure that we make Nigeria a safe place for everybody,” he said.
