The Kaduna State Police Command has successfully foiled a daring kidnap attempt by armed bandits in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area, rescuing nine abducted persons unharmed.
The operation followed credible intelligence on Wednesday at about 12:45 p.m. that approximately 15 heavily armed bandits had attacked farmers near Unguwan Sa’idu Village, a few kilometres from Birnin Gwari town.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the Area Commander and Divisional Police Officer swiftly mobilised teams from the Police Mobile Force (PMF) and Kaduna Vigilante Service (KADVIS) operatives for a rescue mission.
Upon arrival, the security forces engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle. Overwhelmed by superior firepower, the criminals fled into the bush on motorcycles. A hot pursuit by the operatives forced the bandits to abandon their captives and escape.
The nine victims, who were found tied with ropes, were rescued unharmed. They have been identified as: Hudu Rabiu, 31, Yusuf Sagir, 20, Sagir Rabiu, 17, Muhammad Kabir, 23, Kabir Lawal, 20, Idris Abubakar, 17, Mustapha Zayyanu, 18, Kabiru Rabiu, 18, Usman Lawal, 18. All nine have since been reunited with their families.
However, tragedy struck as the team was returning from the successful operation. Suspected bandits ambushed the operatives along the route, killing two police officers who sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, expressed condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the slain officers, describing their deaths as a painful loss.
“Their sacrifice remains a testament to the courage, dedication, and selflessness of our officers who risk their lives daily to protect citizens,” the commissioner said.
He added that the command is intensifying investigations and tactical operations to apprehend those responsible for the ambush and bring them to justice.
