Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has declared that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has no alternative to President Bola Tinubu as its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
Speaking with the Senate Press Corps on Tuesday, Kalu expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, arguing that even past presidents who struggled in their first term were re-elected. He acknowledged the economic difficulties Nigerians are facing but assured that the ongoing reforms are necessary for long-term stability.
“We are appealing to Nigerians to be patient with the reform process. APC is not considering another presidential candidate outside of our party. We remain committed to democratic principles and fully support the sitting President,” Kalu said.
He emphasized that economic reforms often come with challenges but are crucial for national progress.
“The economy has been fragmented, and we are in the process of rebuilding it. It’s a tough journey, but patience is required. Economic challenges are not unique to Nigeria; countries like the UK and Canada are facing similar issues,” he added.
Kalu also highlighted Tinubu’s consultative approach to governance, noting that the President engages both local and international stakeholders before making key economic decisions.
Addressing the renewed debate over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election following the release of former military Head of State Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, Kalu said he is eager to read a second edition, as he believes the first did not reveal the full truth.
“I look forward to the second edition of Babangida’s book because the first did not disclose all the realities. I was present during the events of June 12, and I know what happened. Babangida should name those responsible for preventing the election’s declaration,” Kalu stated.
He insisted that Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the election, should receive full recognition.
“Since Abiola won, his portrait should be placed among Nigeria’s past presidents. I commend former President Buhari for honoring him posthumously, but I urge President Tinubu to take it further by officially recognizing him. This would help bring closure to his family and the nation,” he added.
