A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and member of its Board of Trustees, Chief Bode George, has declared that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar cannot be the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, George emphasized that the PDP’s internal zoning arrangement disqualifies another northern candidate from contesting so soon after the 2023 election.
“Atiku cannot be the PDP presidential candidate in 2027. Our zoning principle stipulates a rotation of eight years between the North and the South. If Atiku emerges by any means, it will signal the collapse of the party,” George warned.
His comments follow the PDP Governors’ Forum’s recent rejection of the opposition coalition spearheaded by Atiku ahead of the 2027 polls.
Atiku, who was the PDP flagbearer in the 2023 election lost to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a renewed effort to unseat the incumbent in 2027, Atiku recently formed a coalition with Labour Party’s Peter Obi and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
