Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has claimed that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is serving as a placeholder for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), should the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deny Atiku its 2027 presidential ticket.
Speaking during an interview with AIT, Galadima expressed surprise at Atiku’s willingness to work with El-Rufai, recalling the former governor’s past criticism of the PDP stalwart.
“I am shocked Atiku would consider working with El-Rufai,” Galadima said. “This is someone who once told him to save his money for his children because he would never become president.”
Galadima also questioned El-Rufai’s political relevance, citing his alleged poor performance in previous elections despite being a sitting governor at the time.
“El-Rufai couldn’t deliver a single local government to the APC in the 2020 elections,” he stated. “Under his watch, the PDP won all three senatorial seats in Kaduna, secured 12 out of 14 House of Representatives seats, with the remaining two going to the APC and Labour Party, respectively. Now that he’s out of office and even in conflict with the current governor, how much influence can he really wield?”
He dismissed the emerging SDP coalition as ineffective and accused its members of “mere noisemaking,” insisting El-Rufai’s role was simply to pave the way for Atiku within the party.
“The SDP coalition lacks structure and strength. El-Rufai is just laying the groundwork for Atiku’s possible move to SDP,” he alleged.
Galadima maintained that the NNPP would be the true rallying point for opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, following the unveiling of a new coalition under the SDP, former SDP presidential candidate Adewale Adebayo revealed that talks are ongoing with Atiku, Peter Obi, and other key political figures to join forces in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
