Prominent human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has reiterated his unwavering support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, stating he would back the former Anambra State governor if he decides to contest.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Farotimi emphasized that discussions about the 2027 elections at this stage serve as a distraction from Nigeria’s pressing issues.
“If elections where our votes would truly count were held today, I would vote for Peter Gregory Obi—unless someone better enters the race. But if it’s the same lineup as last time, I’m certainly voting for Obi,” he said.
While expressing hope that Obi would take a bolder stance on policy matters, Farotimi maintained that, in terms of integrity and competence, Obi remains his preferred candidate.
“Something drastic would have to happen for me to withdraw my support. It could be a problematic alliance or association that I find unacceptable—but outside of that, there’s no one else I would support,” he explained.
Farotimi, who served as the spokesperson for the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 elections, added that his continued support is driven by a sincere desire to see a better Nigeria.
He concluded by urging a shift in national focus away from premature election talk, saying, “Our current reality does not allow for meaningful conversations about elections. We must first address the fundamental issues confronting the nation.”
