Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has turned down an invitation from former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa on Sunday, Lamido described El-Rufai’s offer as an insult, emphasizing that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) played a crucial role in shaping El-Rufai’s political career.
“The PDP, which we built, is the same party that gave birth to El-Rufai’s political journey. Now, he expects us to leave it? That’s not possible,” Lamido said.
He also recalled El-Rufai’s past criticism of Nigerian politicians, questioning his sudden call for opposition leaders to join the SDP.
Lamido reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, stating that the party has done nothing to warrant his defection.
It was reported that El-Rufai recently left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the SDP and, in an interview with BBC Hausa, urged key opposition figures—including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola—to join him in the new party. While he did not directly mention Lamido, the former Jigawa governor made it clear that he had no interest in leaving the PDP.
