Key political leaders from the North and other regions across Nigeria have reportedly decided to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a viable platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that these leaders, after months of strategic meetings, view the PDP as a “dead horse”, with its governors no longer seen as reliable forces to lead the opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
A committee, formed in late December 2024, has been tasked with finalizing the framework for a new mega opposition party, with a deadline set for late February 2025 to announce the chosen political platform.
While discussions on a presidential candidate are still ongoing, several names are being considered, including:
•Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (PDP’s 2023 candidate)
•Mr. Peter Obi (Labour Party’s 2023 candidate)
•Mallam Nasir El-Rufai (former Kaduna State governor)
•Mr. Rotimi Amaechi (former Rivers State governor)
•Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (former Sokoto State governor)
•Dr. Goodluck Jonathan (former president, reportedly being considered as a southern contender)
Sources disclosed that high-level meetings have taken place both within Nigeria and internationally, particularly in Western and Eastern capitals, to strategize on forming a credible alternative to the APC. The recently concluded Democracy Summit in Abuja was reportedly part of efforts to galvanize opposition forces ahead of the mega party’s launch.
The PDP is not featuring prominently in the coalition’s plans, as many of its governors are believed to be fearful of President Tinubu and are allegedly working secretly to support his re-election bid.
While several candidates are being considered, Peter Obi is seen as a key figure in any opposition coalition. Some stakeholders argue that no coalition will be viable without his involvement.
Atiku Abubakar is currently acting as a rallying point for the expected coalition, but observers believe that Obi and Tambuwal remain strong alternatives.
While concerns have been raised about Atiku’s age heading into 2027, some coalition members dismiss this as a non-issue, citing the example of Donald Trump, who remains politically active despite his age.
The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, is playing a coordinating role in uniting different factions within the opposition.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) expected to release the 2027 election calendar in May, opposition strategists are racing against time to solidify their plans and present a formidable challenge to the APC.
