The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially declared Prof. Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election held on Saturday.
Faduyile, a former National President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and current Special Adviser on Health Matters to Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, polled a commanding 68,474 votes to defeat his closest rival, Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), who garnered just 1,411 votes. Other candidates trailed far behind: Adesanya Olaoluwa of the Action People’s Party (APP) scored 213 votes, while Clement Funso-Nejo of the Boot Party (BP) recorded 70 votes.
Announcing the results at the collation centre in Okitipupa, the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Gbenga Solomon-Ibileye, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja, said a total of 70,770 votes were cast across the six local government areas, Okitipupa, Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Irele, Odigbo, and Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, with 602 votes rejected.
The bye-election was held to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of former Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Speaking after the declaration, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, described the exercise as a “testing ground” for the 2027 general elections. He acknowledged minor operational hiccups but expressed satisfaction that all election personnel, including those deployed to riverine areas, returned safely with no major security incidents reported.
The overwhelming victory gives the APC a firm hold on the senatorial district ahead of future electoral contests.
