President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday formally inaugurated four newly elected senators following their victories in the recent bye-elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The new members of the upper chamber are Olaka Nwogu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who will represent Rivers South East; Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Nasarawa North; Ikeje Asogwu (APC), representing Enugu North; and Dayo Faduyile (APC) for Ondo South.
The swearing-in ceremony, which took place during plenary, comes after the bye-elections held last Saturday to fill vacancies created in the four senatorial districts.
The Rivers South East seat became vacant following the death of Senator Barinada Mpigi, while the Nasarawa North and Enugu North seats were vacated due to the deaths of Senators Godiya Akwaashiki and Okechukwu Ezea respectively. The Ondo South seat was declared vacant after Senator Jimoh Ibrahim was appointed as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office to the new lawmakers.
In his remarks, Senate President Akpabio welcomed the freshmen legislators to what he described as “a family of the most elite club in the world.” He urged them to rise above partisan interests and focus on advancing national development, reminding them that they now represent the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Study the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders, as amended in 2023, to effectively discharge your legislative responsibilities,” Akpabio advised.
Among those who witnessed the inauguration were Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo.
The induction of the four senators brings the 10th Senate closer to full strength as it continues its legislative business.
