A joint team of Nigerian Army personnel, police operatives, and local hunters has rescued 31 kidnapped passengers following a late-night ambush by armed bandits along the Apata-Obajana road in Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, was disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.
According to Makama, the attackers targeted two Toyota Hiace buses traveling from Lagos to Kano and Katsina. The first vehicle, with registration number DTF 773 XA, was driven by Saminu Yahaya and carried 17 passengers bound for Kano. The second, bearing registration number KNA 170 XA and driven by Bashir Dahiru, was also carrying 17 passengers en route to Katsina.
A local hunter reportedly alerted security forces, triggering a swift response from the joint rescue team. The operatives engaged the kidnappers in a fierce gunfight, forcing the assailants to retreat into the forest and abandon 31 of their captives.
Four of the rescued passengers sustained machete wounds, while another was shot in the thigh. All five injured victims have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Despite the successful rescue operation, seven passengers are still unaccounted for. Security agencies say search and rescue efforts have been intensified to locate and free the remaining victims.
