Leading Nigerian law firm, Banwo & Ighodalo, is set to initiate legal action against Jarrett Tenebe, Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, over allegedly defamatory claims targeting its founding partner, Mr. Asue Ighodalo.
In a letter dated December 18, 2024, signed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), the firm denounced Tenebe’s accusations as “libelous, reckless, and baseless.” The controversy stems from Tenebe’s December 17 interview on TMC TV/Radio, during which he accused Mr. Ighodalo of “stealing 21 government vehicles” from the Edo State Government. Despite a prior demand for retraction and apology in a December 11 letter, Tenebe has failed to comply, prompting Banwo & Ighodalo to issue a final three-day ultimatum before proceeding to court.
In a separate statement, the Team Asue Media Organisation (TAMO), represented by Erhabor Emokpae, refuted the allegations, describing them as a deliberate smear campaign aimed at tarnishing Mr. Ighodalo’s reputation. TAMO clarified that Alaghodaro, an initiative chaired by Mr. Ighodalo, is a private-sector-driven project committed to promoting economic development and investments in Edo State.
The statement underscored Mr. Ighodalo’s reputation for integrity and selflessness, noting that he has personally funded his expenses throughout his 16 years of public service, including his tenure with Alaghodaro. The allegations of theft, TAMO stated, are not only absurd but lack any supporting evidence.
Banwo & Ighodalo reiterated its determination to seek legal redress if the defamatory statements are not retracted within the stipulated timeframe. The firm condemned the spread of misinformation for political purposes, highlighting its detrimental impact on public trust and democratic principles.
Should Tenebe fail to comply, the matter is expected to escalate to formal legal proceedings. Further developments are anticipated in the coming days.
