At least four people have been confirmed dead following a fresh outbreak of violence in Ebonyi State, stemming from a decades-long land dispute between Ndukwe community in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area, and Okporojo in Osso Edda, Edda Local Government Area.
The renewed hostilities, which erupted over the weekend, also led to the destruction of houses and properties valued in millions of naira.
Sources from Okporojo claimed that the deceased were from their community and alleged that the assailants came from neighboring Amasiri. However, the identities of the attackers remain unverified as of press time.
The tense security situation has forced many residents of Edda LGA to avoid the Amasiri route, opting instead for alternative roads through Afikpo town for fear of further violence.
Despite previous peace efforts, including a white paper issued by the previous administration based on committee recommendations, implementation of the proposed solutions has stalled—contributing to the recurring violence.
Chairman of Edda LGA, Chima Ekumankama, confirmed the deaths and described the attack on Okporojo Idima as tragic. He said he had visited the affected community to assess the damage and reassure residents of the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.
“I can assure you that normalcy and peace have returned to the area. I personally visited the community and saw the level of destruction. As we speak, enough security personnel have been deployed to prevent further escalation,” Ekumankama stated.
Similarly, Chairman of Afikpo LGA, Timothy Nwachi, said security operatives have been stationed in the buffer zone between the two communities to ease tensions. He described the renewed violence as unfortunate and urged residents of Amasiri to remain calm while the government addresses the situation.
Meanwhile, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, said he had not yet been briefed about the incident.
