Nigerian troops have successfully rescued 47 civilians, predominantly women and children who were held captive by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kangarwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The operation was carried out by the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK). In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Military Information Officer, Capt. Mohammed Goni, attributed the rescue to sustained aggressive ground and air offensives against ISWAP strongholds in the Lake Chad region.
“The unrelenting pressure forced the terrorists to abandon their positions in confusion, enabling the victims to escape from prolonged captivity,” Goni said.
The rescued individuals are currently receiving medical attention at a secure location. Relevant government agencies are working with the military to provide humanitarian support, facilitate rehabilitation, and ensure their safe reintegration into society.
This latest success underscores the military’s intensified campaign in the Lake Chad Basin and Sambisa Forest axis, which has recently yielded multiple rescues, weapon recoveries, and neutralisation of insurgents.
Operation Hadin Kai command reiterated its commitment to protecting civilian lives while continuing offensive operations to dismantle remaining terrorist networks and restore peace in the North-East.
