A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated beneath a parked vehicle in the Oke Mushin area of Lagos on Tuesday, injuring the vehicle’s owner and sparking panic among residents.
The blast occurred around 6 a.m. at No. 22 Wey Street when the owner of a gold-coloured Toyota Sienna with registration number AAA11FX attempted to start the car after it had been parked overnight. The explosion caused significant damage to the vehicle, particularly on the passenger side, scattering shattered glass and leaving visible burn marks and explosive residue at the scene.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, who visited the scene, confirmed that preliminary investigations identified the device as an IED planted underneath the vehicle. “The owner sustained minor injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment,” he said.
Fatai added that Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives conducted a thorough search of the area and found no additional explosive devices. “Remnants of the IED have been recovered and taken for forensic analysis. The area has been certified safe, and there is no cause for alarm,” the police chief assured residents.
The traditional ruler of Oke Mushin, Chief Tajudeen Lasisi Farounbi, said he received a distress call shortly after the incident and promptly alerted security agencies. “When I arrived, parts of the vehicle had been shattered by the explosion. I quickly informed the police and warned residents not to tamper with the vehicle before bomb disposal experts arrived,” he stated.
According to the Baale, the vehicle had been regularly parked in the area for about two to three months, though he had limited knowledge of its owner.
Security agencies have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the perpetrators, establish the motive behind the attack, and ascertain whether it was a targeted assault or part of a wider threat. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects or activities.
CP Fatai reassured the public that security forces remain on high alert. “We will not allow criminal elements to gain a foothold in Lagos. Our borders are being monitored, and we remain vigilant,” he said.
