A prosecution witness for the Federal Government, identified as BBB, on Wednesday presented a certified true copy (CTC) of the death certificate of Ahmed Gulak during the ongoing terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Gulak, a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was assassinated in Owerri, Imo State, in 2021. The attack has been linked to suspected IPOB members.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the witness, who is the second prosecution witness (PW-2), tendered the document before Justice James Omotosho at the Federal High Court, Abuja, while being led in evidence by the Federal Government’s lead counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN.
At the resumed hearing, Awomolo informed the court that although the session was scheduled for the cross-examination of PW-2, he had one additional question for the witness. Kanu’s lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, did not oppose the request, prompting the judge to grant permission.
Awomolo questioned the witness about an earlier testimony, in which he claimed that a radio broadcast by Kanu incited a sit-at-home order that allegedly led to Gulak’s death. The witness confirmed this and stated that he had participated in aspects of the investigation into the killing.
He also informed the court that he had with him a certified true copy of a medical report on Gulak’s death, dated July 18, 2021, and issued by the Nigeria Police, Owerri, Imo State.
After the document was shown to Kanu’s legal team, Agabi raised no objections. Justice Omotosho admitted it into evidence and marked it as Exhibit PWJ.
Awomolo then sought and received permission for the witness to read the document aloud in court. BBB proceeded to read the certificate, which detailed the circumstances surrounding Gulak’s death, believed to have been carried out by suspected IPOB members.
Following the reading, Chief Agabi commenced his cross-examination of the witness.
