Seven Nigerian journalists have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred on Monday along the Biliri to Kumo highway in Gombe State.
The journalists were said to be returning from the wedding ceremony of a colleague held in Kaltungo when their vehicle was involved in the fatal crash.
Reacting to the incident, Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the development as shocking and heartbreaking, noting that the state has suffered a painful loss.
According to the governor, the deaths go beyond the families of the victims, affecting the entire media community and public service sector in Gombe State.
Among those who died were Zarah Umar, Manager of News at the Nigerian Television Authority Gombe and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor in the Office of the First Lady; Manu Kwami, Manager Administration at NTA; Isa Lawan; Musa Tabra, a retired Manager of News; Aminu Adamu, a senior driver; Adams Danladi of StarTimes; and Judith Kutus, an information officer with the Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board.
Governor Yahaya described the deceased as dedicated professionals whose contributions to journalism and public service played an important role in governance and information dissemination across the state.
He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the management and staff of the Nigerian Television Authority, as well as media practitioners within and outside Gombe State.
The governor also expressed concern for those who sustained injuries in the crash and are currently receiving treatment. The injured include Emmanuel Akila, NTA Government House correspondent; Steven Doddo of the NTA Marketing Department; Nina Gadal from the Ministry of Information; and Jonathan Bara, Manager Marketing at NTA.
Governor Yahaya assured the injured persons of the support of the state government and prayed for their quick recovery.
Describing the incident as a dark period for the state, he called for prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and comfort for their families.
Authorities are yet to provide detailed information on the cause of the accident.
Road accidents remain a major concern across Nigeria, often linked to overspeeding, poor vehicle conditions and reckless driving. The Gombe crash occurred on the same day another fatal accident was recorded in Ogun State, where two people reportedly lost their lives.
