The Federal Government has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner amid growing concern over a fresh wave of anti-foreigner protests and reported attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the envoy is expected at its Abuja headquarters on Monday, May 4, 2026, where Nigerian officials will formally express strong dissatisfaction over developments perceived as a threat to the long-standing diplomatic and economic relations between both countries.
The meeting comes in response to recent protests across South Africa that have reportedly escalated into harassment, violence, and the destruction of foreign-owned businesses—many of which belong to Nigerians. These incidents have sparked outrage in Nigeria and heightened fears about the safety of its citizens residing and working in South Africa.
Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa stated that the government is deeply concerned about the potential impact of the unrest on bilateral ties. He emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to safeguarding its citizens abroad while continuing to pursue diplomatic channels to resolve the issue.
Despite the tension, the Federal Government has urged Nigerians to remain calm, assuring them that high-level diplomatic efforts are underway to ensure their safety and protection.
Nigeria and South Africa maintain one of Africa’s most significant bilateral relationships, built on a shared history that includes Nigeria’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle. However, recurring outbreaks of xenophobic violence in South Africa have periodically strained these ties.
Past incidents in 2008, 2015, and 2019 resulted in widespread attacks on foreign nationals, including Nigerians, leading to deaths and destruction of property. The 2019 crisis, in particular, triggered a diplomatic standoff, with Nigeria recalling its High Commissioner and boycotting the World Economic Forum on Africa.
Although both nations have since introduced measures such as early warning systems and joint consular forums to prevent future violence, tensions and anti-immigrant sentiments continue to surface, often driven by local concerns over unemployment and crime.
Observers warn that if the current situation is not swiftly addressed, it could once again strain relations between Africa’s two largest economies and hinder regional integration efforts under frameworks like the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The outcome of Monday’s meeting is expected to play a key role in determining whether both countries can ease tensions and reaffirm their commitment to cooperation, mutual respect, and the protection of their citizens.
