Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has unveiled a 27-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo set to feature in his sixth World Cup at the age of 41.
During the squad announcement in Oeiras, Martinez described the list as “27 players plus one,” paying tribute to late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident last year at the age of 28. The coach said Jota’s spirit and dedication would continue to inspire the national team throughout the tournament.
Martinez also explained the inclusion of four goalkeepers and five fullbacks, citing the demands of travel, weather conditions and scheduling during the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Fourth-choice goalkeeper Ricardo Velho will travel with the team as a reserve option and can only be officially registered if another goalkeeper suffers an injury.
Portugal begin their Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Houston on June 17, before facing Uzbekistan on June 23 and Colombia on June 27 in Miami. Ahead of the tournament, the Nations League champions will play warm-up matches against Chile and Nigeria national football team.
