Abuja — The Senate on Thursday passed a combined budget of N403.1 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) covering the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years, in a major push to bolster the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force and address the country’s security challenges.
The appropriation includes N170.10 billion for 2025 and N233.96 billion for 2026. The approval came after the chamber adopted the report of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, presented by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde (APC, Oyo Central), who stood in for the Chairman, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori (APC, Jigawa East).
Presenting the report, Senator Akintunde said the committee was convinced the budgets would equip the Trust Fund to fulfill its mandate of providing critical support to the Police Force.
“The funds will be utilised for the procurement of operational vehicles and security equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and stations, training and retraining of personnel, as well as other programmes aimed at enhancing policing across the country,” he stated.
For the 2026 fiscal year, N43.78 billion was allocated for capital expenditure, while N179.11 billion was earmarked for the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Headquarters, resulting in total capital spending of N222.89 billion.
Recurrent expenditure for the year stands at N11.07 billion, comprising N1.86 billion for personnel costs and N9.21 billion for overheads.
In 2025, capital projects will receive N159.74 billion with N27.29 billion going to the NPTF Headquarters and N132.45 billion to the Nigeria Police Force. Recurrent spending totals N10.36 billion, including N1.82 billion for personnel and N8.54 billion for overheads.
Funding for both years will be drawn from statutory sources, including 0.5 per cent of revenue to the Federation Account, 0.5 per cent of Value Added Tax (VAT), 0.05 per cent of net profits of companies operating in Nigeria, as well as grants, donations, and other legitimate sources.
Senator Akintunde urged the Police Trust Fund to ensure the approved funds deliver visible improvements in operational efficiency, with priority given to personnel welfare, capacity building, modern infrastructure, and critical intervention projects.
He also emphasised the need for robust monitoring and evaluation to ensure transparency, value for money, and timely project execution.
The Senate directed prompt implementation of the budgets, expressing optimism that the intervention would significantly enhance the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling the nation’s security challenges.
