Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Tuesday took to the streets of Ikeja, Lagos State, to protest the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, calling for urgent government intervention.
The demonstration attracted a large number of teachers and supporters who marched through parts of the state capital carrying placards and singing solidarity songs. The protesters urged security agencies and relevant authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of the kidnapped victims and strengthen security measures in schools across the country.
Messages displayed on placards highlighted concerns about safety in educational institutions, with inscriptions such as “End the religion of fear in our schools” and “Let teachers teach in peace.”
The teachers expressed concern that repeated attacks on schools could undermine education by discouraging parents from enrolling their children and disrupting academic activities. They also warned that the growing insecurity poses a serious threat to the welfare of teachers and students.
The protest follows widespread public outrage over the recent kidnapping incident in Oyo State. Civil society organisations and education stakeholders have also raised concerns, stressing that schools must remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
The protesters appealed to both federal and state governments to act swiftly in rescuing the abducted victims and implementing measures to prevent future attacks on schools.
