The Nigerian Federal Government has delayed the planned evacuation of its nationals from South Africa, shifting the operation from Monday to Wednesday, 10 June 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited “unforeseen logistical considerations” as the reason for the postponement. Officials noted that the delay will allow time to finalise all operational arrangements to ensure a smooth exercise.
More than 1,000 Nigerians have already been screened and cleared for repatriation. President Bola Tinubu has approved five evacuation flights for the operation. The Ministry said further details on flight schedules and arrival plans will be released once final clearances are obtained.
The evacuation follows recent tensions and anti-immigration protests targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, prompting several African countries to assist their citizens in returning home. Nigerians who wish to leave have been coordinating with authorities under the repatriation programme.
