Operatives of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta (NNS Delta) have dismantled a sophisticated camouflaged storage site used for crude oil theft in the Ugbokodo Creek area of Delta State. The breakthrough came during Operation Delta Sentinel, following credible intelligence on suspected illegal activities in the area.
Naval teams, supported by aerial surveillance and drone imagery, conducted a thorough search of the creek region. Initially, the location appeared inconspicuous. However, closer analysis of drone footage revealed a large, freshly dug reservoir deliberately hidden beneath layers of leaves, planks, wood, and dense vegetation. Further exploitation of the site led to the recovery of approximately 17,000 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil.
According to the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the site bore clear signs of recent theft activity and functioned as a temporary storage point within a larger illicit supply chain.
“The discovery highlights the increasingly sophisticated concealment methods being adopted by criminal elements to sustain crude oil theft operations,” Folorunsho said. “However, the integration of intelligence-led operations and aerial surveillance capabilities continues to enhance the Nigerian Navy’s ability to detect and disrupt such illegal activities.”
The recovered reservoir, products, and associated materials were processed according to standard operational procedures, denying oil thieves further use of the facility.
Crude oil theft remains a major security and economic challenge in the Niger Delta, resulting in significant revenue losses for Nigeria and widespread environmental damage. Criminal syndicates have increasingly resorted to underground reservoirs and other advanced concealment tactics to evade detection.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on these criminal networks through persistent surveillance and coordinated operations aimed at safeguarding the country’s energy infrastructure and economic interests.
