The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female law student, simply identified as Tomisin, sparking concern across the institution.
In an official statement, SUG President Comrade Temidayo Adeboye revealed that Tomisin was abducted while returning from a religious retreat organised by the Scripture Union Student Fellowship. She had travelled alongside the fellowship’s National General Director, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, and eight other participants.
Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and Vice-President of the UI chapter, was part of a delegation that attended the Scripture Union National Conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.
The union dismissed circulating reports claiming that eight UI students were missing, clarifying that Tomisin is the only student of the institution currently unaccounted for.
According to the SUG, communication with Tomisin was lost as the group made their way back from the conference. Her failure to appear for faculty examinations on Monday and Tuesday heightened fears for her safety. While another UI student from the Department of Music who attended the same conference has returned safely, the vehicle conveying the National General Director remains missing.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr Ademola Lewis, confirmed that the university management is aware of the incident, though it was not notified in advance about the trip. He assured that efforts are underway to secure the student’s safe return and appealed to the university community to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could worsen the situation.
The SUG said it has initiated contact with relevant religious bodies and security agencies to facilitate her rescue.
