Major energy companies are pressing governments worldwide for comprehensive policy and regulatory reforms, warning that coordinated action is essential to prevent delays in the clean energy transition and large-scale electrification efforts.
In a strong collective intervention, the companies emphasized that achieving widespread electrification hinges on enabling government policies, modernized electricity market designs, and regulatory frameworks that foster long-term investment while boosting system efficiency. They highlighted the urgent need for substantial upgrades to power grid infrastructure, noting that aging transmission and distribution networks in many regions are ill-equipped to manage surging electricity demand fueled by industrial growth, urbanization, and the integration of renewable sources.
The firms also called for streamlined permitting and approval processes, arguing that bureaucratic delays continue to hinder renewable energy projects and broader electrification initiatives. At the same time, they cautioned that persistent volatility in global energy markets exacerbated by recent commodity price spikes and supply chain disruptions risks inflating operating costs, eroding competitiveness, and stalling critical investment decisions.
The appeal comes as governments and industry players reassess long-term energy strategies amid shifting priorities around energy security.
The push aligns with growing international momentum to expand electricity access in Africa. The World Bank and African Development Bank’s (AfDB) flagship Mission 300 initiative, launched to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030, has already delivered power to more than 50 million people across 40 countries in under two years.
In February 2026, Mission 300 outlined plans to extend household electricity access to 17.5 million Nigerians. A month earlier, the AfDB approved a $3.9 million project to help Nigeria and 12 other African nations implement energy compacts under the program.
In January, the World Bank greenlit $50 million to expand solar-powered agricultural solutions across Nigeria and five other countries, aiming to boost productivity, cut post-harvest losses, and widen clean energy access.
Industry leaders say such targeted efforts must be supported by broader reforms if Africa and the rest of the world are to meet ambitious electrification and sustainability targets.
