A second group of 66 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Thursday evening at about 8:50 p.m. as part of the Federal Government’s ongoing repatriation programme.
The returnees were brought home under an initiative approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assist Nigerians affected by recent attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa. They were accompanied by officials of the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, with the flight facilitated by ValueJet Chairman and CEO, Kunle Soname.
The latest arrival follows an earlier evacuation that saw 258 Nigerians returned to the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that all registered Nigerians wishing to return home will be accommodated under the exercise.
Upon arrival, the evacuees received various support packages. According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), those from Imo State will each receive N1 million from Governor Hope Uzodimma. MTN Nigeria provided free SIM cards, N50,000 worth of data, and credited N100,000 into each returnee’s bank account. Pastor Bolaji Idowu, founder of Harvesters International Christian Centre, also donated N100,000 to every evacuee. The returnees expressed gratitude for the swift evacuation and the assistance extended to them.
Officials from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and other relevant agencies were on ground to receive and document the arrivals.
