At least 16 people have been pulled alive from the rubble of a collapsed residential building in the Alakija area of Lagos State, with emergency teams intensifying search-and-rescue efforts for any remaining victims still trapped beneath the debris.
The latest update from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that six additional survivors were rescued on Thursday, raising the total number of those brought out alive from 10 to 16. The survivors sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly handed over to medical personnel for treatment.
The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. at a multi-storey residential building located along Old Ojo Road, by Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Satellite Town.
According to a statement by the Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, a distress call was received at 11:37 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of responders from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station. The team arrived at the scene within 12 minutes.
“The incident involves the collapse of a storey building, an existing residential structure occupied by multiple residents at the time of the incident,” Adeseye said.
Search and rescue operations remain active as teams work to locate and evacuate anyone who may still be trapped.
Participating agencies in the coordinated response include the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
The exact number of people who were inside the building at the time of the collapse is yet to be confirmed. The cause of the structural failure has not been determined.
Residents and eyewitnesses gathered at the scene as heavy rescue operations continued amid concerns for those still unaccounted for. Further updates are expected as the operation progresses.
