The Nigerian Navy has disrupted a major illegal distribution network for stolen petroleum products in Rivers State, seizing approximately 22,870 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) during an intelligence-driven raid.
Personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH, operating under Operation Delta Sentinel, intercepted a wooden boat transporting the contraband along creek corridors in the Orashi Forest area of Okolomade Community, Abua/Odual Local Government Area, which borders Ogbia LGA in Bayelsa State.
Acting on credible intelligence, the naval team first stopped the boat carrying 36 sacks of suspected AGO. A follow-up search, supported by aerial drone surveillance, uncovered additional stockpiles hidden under vegetation and inside ponds in the surrounding area.
Troops recovered another 45 sacks, bringing the total to 81 sacks containing roughly 22,870 litres of the product.
Confirming the success of the operation, Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said the patrol team moved swiftly to exploit the intelligence.
“The recovered products and the wooden boat were handled in accordance with extant anti-crude oil theft procedures, further disrupting the logistics chain supporting illegal refining activities in the Niger Delta,” Folorunsho stated.
The operation not only removed significant quantities of illegally refined products from circulation but also denied criminal elements the use of the intercepted vessel for future smuggling activities.
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations under Operation Delta Sentinel aimed at dismantling crude oil theft networks, securing the nation’s waterways, and protecting critical economic assets in the region.
