A three-year-old boy was dramatically pulled alive from the rubble in Venezuela six days after powerful earthquakes devastated the country, becoming a symbol of hope in the midst of a major disaster.
The child, identified as Klieber Morán, was rescued in La Guaira state by a Jordanian rescue team, Venezuelan authorities said. He was given first aid at the scene before being transferred to a hospital in the capital, Caracas, where his vital signs were reported as stable.
Interim President Delcy Rodríguez praised the rescue as “a source of hope for our people.” National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez added that the boy’s survival shows rescue efforts must continue.
“Klieber’s rescue shows there is still hope of continuing to find people alive,” he said, noting that both local and international teams are still searching collapsed buildings.
The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, struck last week and have so far killed at least 1,943 people, injured more than 10,000, and left tens of thousands missing. Nearly 59,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed, according to preliminary NASA satellite analysis.
The rescue came well beyond the usual 72-hour window when most survivors are typically found. Despite the passage of time, operations continue in affected areas, with shelters opened for displaced residents.
The United Nations has warned of a rapidly worsening humanitarian situation, with widespread food shortages, collapsed services, and urgent needs for shelter and medical aid. International teams from several countries, including the United States and Mexico, remain on the ground to assist.
Klieber Morán’s rescue has provided a rare positive note as the country grapples with the extensive destruction and ongoing search for survivors.
