African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has appointed veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson for the 2027 general elections.
In an appointment letter shared by Okonkwo on his X account on Thursday, Atiku said the decision followed his emergence as the ADC’s presidential flagbearer. The letter highlighted Okonkwo’s “competence, public communication skills, integrity, political judgment, and ability to represent” the former Vice President’s positions professionally.
“I am pleased to offer you an appointment as my Spokesperson for the 2027 General Elections in Nigeria,” the letter read. “While congratulating you on this appointment, I look forward to your valuable contribution to the campaign and to the advancement of democratic engagement in Nigeria.”
Reacting to the appointment, Okonkwo expressed gratitude to Atiku, describing it as a testament to the ex-Vice President’s democratic credentials.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he said.
Okonkwo noted that Atiku’s leadership style emphasises dialogue and compromise rather than conflict, even with associates who express reservations. He added that discussions with Atiku and other ADC leaders had addressed and secured the interests of the South-East region within the constraints of the Electoral Act and prevailing political realities.
The actor-turned-politician also commended former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu and Ekene Onwuka for their roles in the coalition that facilitated his appointment. He appealed for prayers for wisdom, courage, and protection as he takes on the new role.
This marks Atiku Abubakar’s seventh presidential bid and the fourth time he will contest as a party’s candidate. He previously ran as a presidential candidate in 2007, 2019, and 2023.
Okonkwo, who served as spokesperson to Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election, recently had a public fallout with the former Anambra State governor, who has filed a defamation suit against him.
