The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks to give more eligible Nigerians the chance to register.
The extension, announced on Friday by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, follows feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders. The CVR, which began on 18 August 2025, was originally scheduled to end on 10 July 2026. It will now run until Friday, 24 July 2026.
“In order to provide additional opportunity for eligible citizens who are yet to register, the Commission has extended the exercise to Friday, 24th July 2026,” Haruna said in a statement.
The Commission described the extension as part of its commitment to ensuring every eligible Nigerian has a fair opportunity to be included in the voters’ register ahead of future elections.
In a significant development, INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service (online) registration option for first-time voters, which will launch on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
Eligible citizens will be able to initiate and complete their voter registration, including biometric capture using their personal devices via INEC’s dedicated portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org. A step-by-step guide is available on the site.
Haruna explained that the new system features robust identity verification, biometric validation, and backend integrity checks to maintain the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the
Register of Voters,” he added.
INEC urged unregistered eligible voters to take advantage of both the extended period and the new digital platform. The Commission reiterated its dedication to a credible, inclusive, and technology-driven electoral process.
