The Imo State Police Command has impounded more than 25 vehicles operating with obscured, covered, or missing registration plates as part of a intensified statewide operation to combat crime and enhance road safety.
Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso announced the development during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Owerri on Friday, stating that the exercise is in direct response to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu.
Bosso explained that vehicles with concealed number plates are frequently used by kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists, and other criminals to evade identification and frustrate law enforcement efforts.
“The enforcement is backed by the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012, which mandate that every vehicle must display valid and clearly visible registration plates,” he said. “We derive our powers from the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, and other relevant laws to ensure compliance in the interest of public safety and national security.”
He stressed that the operation will be carried out professionally and intelligence-driven, while respecting the rights of law-abiding citizens. All violators, irrespective of their status or position, will be prosecuted according to the law.
The police chief revealed that owners of the impounded vehicles are currently being profiled, with appropriate sanctions to follow. He dismissed allegations of harassment or extortion, describing the move as a proactive security measure aimed at improving vehicle traceability and restoring public confidence.
Bosso urged motorists to immediately regularise any damaged, obscured, or missing number plates and called on residents to provide timely intelligence on suspicious vehicles and activities, emphasising that security is a shared responsibility.
