Abuja — Nigeria’s Chief Justice, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has urged newly appointed judges of the lower courts to steer clear of unsolicited gifts and avoid lavish celebrations that could expose them to petitions and integrity issues.
The CJN gave the charge on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of an induction course organised for the new judges by the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who was represented by NJI Administrator, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, stressed the need for the judges to prioritise speedy dispensation of justice, noting that timely resolution of cases remains critical to sustaining public confidence in the judiciary.
She also called for harmonious working relationships between judges and court staff, particularly registrars and exhibit keepers.
“You must work harmoniously with all the officials under you and ensure that you manage them diplomatically and technically,” the CJN advised.
She further enjoined the new judges to thoroughly study the rules of court so they are not outmanoeuvred by lawyers, while cautioning them against rudeness to their heads of court. On the use of contempt powers, she warned that it should be exercised sparingly to prevent backlash.
“Most importantly, do not allow unsolicited gifts. You must equally avoid throwing unnecessary birthday parties. People will seize the opportunity to bring unsolicited gifts that can lead to petitions,” Justice Kekere-Ekun warned.
In his welcome address, Justice Adejumo congratulated the new judges and reminded them of the immense responsibility placed on their shoulders as key players in the administration of justice at the grassroots level.
He described the lower courts as vital “filters” that ease the burden on superior courts while directly impacting the lives of ordinary citizens.
“The competence of those chosen to man these courts is of paramount importance to the administration of justice,” Adejumo said, adding that the induction programme was designed to equip the judges with the necessary ethical standards, courtroom skills, and practical knowledge of substantive and procedural laws.
The programme is expected to prepare the new judges for effective service on the bench.
