Abuja – The Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) has firmly rejected a circulating document that purportedly suspends the 2026 NBA National Elections, describing it as unauthenticated and lacking any official backing.
In a public statement issued on Tuesday, the Committee urged lawyers across the country to disregard the document, which it said does not emanate from the Office of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation.
“The document appears to be an unofficial publication and should not be relied upon by members,” the ECNBA stated.
The Committee reaffirmed its independence as a body established under the NBA Constitution 2015 (as amended in 2025). It emphasized that once constituted by the National Executive Council (NEC), it has full authority to conduct the elections without external interference.
“The 2026 NBA National Elections will proceed as scheduled on Saturday, 18 July 2026. There is no legal impediment whatsoever to the conduct of the elections,” the statement declared.
To ensure transparency and credibility, the ECNBA said accredited observers including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), ICAN, and other monitoring groups will be present during the polls.
The Committee also confirmed that the Candidates’ Debate and Manifesto Day will hold today, Wednesday, 8 July 2026, as planned. Candidates and stakeholders have been invited to participate either physically or virtually via Zoom.
Addressing concerns about the voters’ register, the ECNBA encouraged members to continue scrutinizing the recently published Branch-by-Branch Voters List. It dismissed claims that the list was padded, describing the publication as a deliberate step to promote transparency and allow genuine observations before finalization.
The Committee advised all candidates and members to rely solely on official ECNBA communications and adhere to the revised election timetable.
