Bar Association (NBA) President Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has successfully mediated a resolution to the electoral crisis in the Port Harcourt Branch, securing agreement among key stakeholders and clearing the path for a credible branch election.
The breakthrough came during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting convened by the NBA President in Port Harcourt. Attendees included members of the branch’s Caretaker Committee, chairmen of all NBA branches in Rivers State, past chairmen of the Port Harcourt Branch, and candidates for the upcoming election.
After thorough discussions on the issues that had threatened the polls, stakeholders reached a unanimous consensus. Mr. Idris Abayomi Shehu will step down as Chairman of the Electoral Committee while retaining his role as Chairman of the Caretaker Committee. Former NBA Third Vice President Omubo Frank Briggs has been appointed the new Chairman of the Electoral Committee.
The remaining members of the Caretaker Committee will continue to serve on the Electoral Committee. They will be joined by the NBA First Vice President and one additional member to broaden the committee’s composition. Chairmen of the other eight NBA branches in Rivers State will also help supervise the election to reinforce transparency and accountability.
As a result of these changes, the Port Harcourt Branch election has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 5 August 2026. The delay allows time for the new arrangements to take effect.
