A Nigerian migrant who successfully resisted deportation on human rights grounds has been convicted of raping a British teenager in north Wales after dragging her into woods on an isolated path.
Gift Oladele, 24, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault at Mold Crown Court in March. The attack took place on 7 September last year as the 19-year-old walked home in Wrexham after a night out.
Oladele approached the young woman, now 20, and offered to walk with her, saying he was heading the same way. Near a secluded area he grabbed her by the mouth, forced her into the woods and raped her. The victim later described being overpowered, having her mouth covered and being hit on the head six times.
She said pictures of her family flashed through her mind as she feared she would be killed, and that she switched into survival mode to try to get home.
After the assault, Oladele told her, “I think you’ve had enough now. At least you have been raped by someone good-looking.” He also threatened to find her if she reported the crime and warned he would take photographs and post them online.
At the time of the Wrexham attack, Oladele was already on bail in connection with a separate rape allegation in Manchester from November 2024. He had previously been jailed in 2022 for a sexually motivated attack and had earlier avoided being returned to Nigeria after arguing that deportation would breach his human rights.
The victim’s account of the assault and the comments made to her afterwards have now been reported publicly.
