Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has accused the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, of securing loans for the nation’s capital without the approval of the National Assembly.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm, the senator disclosed that she had raised the issue with the leadership of the Senate.
“I have never seen Wike come to the National Assembly and before the Senate to ask for approval of anything,” she said.
Kingibe explained that FCT budgets are normally presented to the Senate through the relevant committee for consideration before approval by the upper chamber. She alleged, however, that the minister has not followed this process in obtaining loans for the Territory.
“I am definitely saying he has been taking loans without the approval of the National Assembly. I don’t know about the House, but certainly not the Senate,” the lawmaker stated.
According to her, she became aware of the borrowings after reviewing records from the Debt Management Office covering the period between August 2023 and March 2026.
She challenged anyone disputing her claim to produce the Votes and Proceedings of the day Wike appeared before the National Assembly to seek approval for the loans.
Kingibe further argued that the minister’s powers cannot exceed those of President Bola Tinubu, from whom he derives his authority. She noted that the President routinely submits requests for loans and appointments to the National Assembly for consideration and approval.
“His powers cannot be more than the powers of the Commander-in-Chief,” she insisted.
