A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the release of the international passport of former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji to allow him travel overseas for medical treatment.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted the order after Nnaji’s lawyer, Ogwu Onoja, SAN, moved a motion seeking the return of the travel document. The judge fixed October 26 for the continuation of Nnaji’s trial.
Nnaji, 63, is standing trial on a six-count charge brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. He was arraigned on July 13 and pleaded not guilty. He has denied the allegations.
The ICPC claims Nnaji received ₦29,578,466.67 in salary and allowances between August 2023 and October 2025 while serving as minister. The commission describes the payments as proceeds of unlawful acts under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. It also alleges that by collecting the money he used his office to confer a corrupt advantage on himself, contrary to the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
Four other counts centre on alleged certificate forgery. Prosecutors say Nnaji knowingly presented a forged National Youth Service Corps certificate numbered A231309 to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation during the documentation for his ministerial appointment. They further allege that he submitted a false University of Nigeria, Nsukka degree certificate in Microbiology/Biochemistry bearing Certificate No. 004501, and that he made and used both documents as genuine.
The ICPC says the alleged offences violate Sections 363 and 364 of the Penal Code. The charges remain before the court.
