Nigerian drug dealer Tony Obina has been recaptured after escaping from Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, Liberia, authorities and local reports confirmed Monday.
Obina was among a group of inmates who fled the facility on Sunday. Liberia’s Ministry of Justice confirmed the jailbreak in a statement issued the same day, saying a number of prisoners had escaped and that the Joint Security of Liberia had launched an operation to find them.
West Trybe News Media later circulated video footage showing Obina and another man being escorted back to the prison after local residents reportedly found them. In the footage, Obina appears wearing only a pair of blue boxers.
The Ministry of Justice said the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation was reviewing prison records to determine the exact number and identities of those who escaped. Officials said the names and identifying details of the remaining fugitives would be released after verification to help security agencies and the public locate them.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report any information on the escapees to the nearest police station or other security agencies. The ministry warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend or harbour any of the fugitives themselves.
Obina had recently been convicted by a 12-member jury of the 13th Judicial Circuit Court in Margibi County in a major drug-trafficking case. He was found guilty alongside two officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency, Joe Logan and Lovette Flowers. The case involved drugs valued at about US$181,008 and more than L$63.2 million.
Reports indicated that Obina and other escapees were apprehended by community members and security personnel while allegedly trying to flee after the breakout. The Ministry of Justice said the Joint Security would issue further updates as efforts to recapture the remaining escapees continued.
