President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation by a few days and will return to Nigeria at the weekend.
Tinubu left the country on August 30 for London. After a week there, he travelled to Paris, where he met French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré, whose media interests include Canal+, Multichoice and Universal Music Group.
Throughout the trip, the president has continued to oversee national affairs from abroad. One recent directive ordered an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 illegal miners in Minna who died after being detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Vice President Kashim Shettima has represented Tinubu at several official functions. Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 for New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he will deliver Nigeria’s national statement. In Shettima’s absence, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume will continue to stand in for the president at events at home.
On the political front, Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council Senator Abubakar Yari has been leading party leaders in consultations with traditional rulers across the country.
The Presidency, in a statement by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, dismissed as “baseless” and “irresponsible” claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a United States-based lobbying firm about Tinubu’s absence from the UN gathering.
