Economic activity in Nsokpo Community, Ogbaku, in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State is being disrupted by repeated kidnappings, armed attacks and the collapse of key roads, a local association has said, urging Governor Hope Uzodinma to intervene before the damage deepens.
The Nsokpo Dynamic Association, in a statement signed by its president, Onyejiaka Mark, and secretary-general, Chukwudi Ohiri, said farmers are now afraid to go to their farms, traders are shutting shops before dusk and parents are limiting children’s movement long before nightfall. The group linked the insecurity to suspected herdsmen and other criminal elements operating from surrounding bushland.
It described the situation as beyond what local efforts can contain and called for sustained government-backed security operations. These should include day and night patrols and a coordinated sweep of the Nwaogwugwu land and bush axis between Ogbaku and Umunoha, as well as the bushes bordering Nsokpo. The association also asked the government to equip community vigilante groups working with conventional security agencies.
Nsokpo’s location along the gateway to Owerri, the state capital, makes its security a wider economic and strategic concern, the group argued.
Compounding the hardship, it said, is the poor state of the Nsokpo Ifakala Nwaorieubi Road and the Nsokpo Lawa Ohi Road. The routes, which connect the community’s four villages to neighbouring areas and markets, have deteriorated so badly that transport has become difficult, costly and dangerous, especially in the rainy season. Movement of farm produce has slowed, transport costs have risen and access to markets has been reduced.
The association appealed to the state government to reconstruct both roads and install streetlights at dark and high-risk sections to improve security and ease commercial activity. Urgent action, it said, would restore access to farms and markets, ease transport difficulties and create a safer environment for businesses.
Copies of the appeal were sent to the Secretary to the State Government, the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services in Imo State, the Commissioner for Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs, the Garrison Commander of 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development, and the Chairman of Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
