Popular Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has warned that she will take legal action against anyone who publishes, shares or circulates statements she regards as false and defamatory about her.
Her lawyers, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, issued a public notice on Friday that was shared on the singer’s Instagram page. The notice states that Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi has instructed them to protect her reputation from publications capable of damaging her personal, professional and spiritual standing.
Alabi, the lawyers said, has spent nearly three decades building a reputation rooted in integrity, honour and public trust. They expressed concern over what they described as false, misleading and harmful statements allegedly circulating about her on social media and other platforms.
The notice makes clear that liability may extend beyond the original author. Anyone who repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies such material could face legal consequences, depending on the facts of each case and any available defences. The use of anonymous, pseudonymous or unverified accounts does not automatically confer immunity, the lawyers warned.
Individuals who have already published material considered defamatory were directed to remove it immediately and stop further publication. Deleting a post, the notice added, does not automatically erase possible liability for its earlier appearance.
Possible remedies listed include damages, injunctions to halt further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and recovery of legal costs. The lawyers said they had been authorised to commence proceedings against those whose actions give rise to an actionable claim, without further notice.
The notice stressed that it is not intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest, or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression.
No specific individuals were named as targets of legal action. The development underscores growing concerns about online defamation and the potential consequences of circulating harmful claims about public figures.
