A lawyer for Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu has accused the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Presidency of complicity through their silence over recent threats against human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore.
Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, in a statement titled “Omoyele Sowore and the Silence of the Authorities,” said the failure of the agencies and the Presidency to respond publicly to the threats and an earlier attack on Sowore suggests the authorities may be enabling political intimidation.
The criticism followed threats by Lere Olayinka, an aide to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, who said Sowore deserved “small small slaps” for describing President Bola Tinubu as a criminal. An All Progressives Congress supporter also warned that Sowore would be “mended” if he visited Ikorodu in Lagos State. The threats came days after Sowore and members of his team were attacked in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Ejimakor described the threats as direct attacks on a major presidential candidate and a public figure known for anti-corruption activism. He said he was shocked that neither the DSS nor the police had announced any investigation or issued a public warning against the statements.
“It is telling that the institutions responsible for public order have issued neither a public notice of intention to investigate, nor a reprimand. And surprisingly, the Presidency has not distanced itself from these threats,” Ejimakor stated.
He argued that the continued silence creates the impression that violence and intimidation against opposition figures are acceptable. “This all-round radio silence suggests complicity. It signals that thuggery against opposition figures is condonable,” he said.
Ejimakor called on the security agencies and the Presidency to investigate the threats immediately, publicly reprimand those responsible, and make clear that attacks or threats against political opponents will not be tolerated. Failure to act, he warned, would further erode public confidence in democratic institutions and the rule of law ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I hereby call on the authorities to immediately investigate, publicly reprimand those responsible, and affirm that violence against a presidential candidate will not be tolerated,” he said. “Anything less erodes the rule of law, and casts a dark shadow on the democratic process.”
