Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that he is still in the race for the 2027 presidential election and will not be forced out by court rulings or political pressure.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 6, in Sokoto, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate said a recent court decision should not be mistaken for the will of the Nigerian people. “Let no one mistake the latest court ruling for the will of the Nigerian people. No manipulation, conjecture or concoction can erase our place in this contest, silence our campaign or deny Nigerians the right to choose their future. We are on the ballot, and the people must be allowed to decide,” he said.
Atiku accused the ruling establishment of using political pressure, manufactured narratives and courtroom manoeuvres to weaken opposition parties and move the country toward a one-party state. He questioned why a government that claims 32 governors and has drawn politicians from other parties would fear a free contest, arguing that those in power should present their record to voters rather than try to sideline rivals.
He also alleged attempts to compromise the voters’ register with artificial intelligence-generated photographs, false names and fictitious identities, warning that such practices threaten the credibility of the electoral process.
Turning to the economy, Atiku blamed the Tinubu administration for worsening hardship after removing the fuel subsidy without adequate protective measures. He cited the decline of the naira, rising food and fuel prices, the closure of factories and small businesses, and the daily struggle of ordinary families. He further pointed to the continued emigration of young Nigerians and persistent insecurity from banditry and kidnapping.
“Look around you. Market stalls stand empty. Feeding your family has become a daily struggle. Fuel prices keep rising, and silent pain fills homes across the country,” he said. He urged citizens not to lose hope: “Do not lose heart. Do not retreat. Your vote is your power, and together, we will take our country back.”
Addressing his supporters, Atiku was emphatic: “Let me be clear to every Nigerian who has stood with us: I am in this race. I am not going anywhere. We will be on the ballot. No threat, blackmail or court manoeuvre will make me abandon you or the cause we share.”
He challenged the government to face voters in a free, fair and credible election. “If those in power believe in their numbers and their record, let us meet at the polls in a free, fair and credible contest.” Directly addressing President Bola Tinubu, he added: “Let me say this plainly: Bola cannot use the courts to escape the judgment of Nigerians at the ballot box.”
Atiku Abubakar served as Nigeria’s vice president from 1999 to 2007.
