President Bola Tinubu on Friday criticised Peter Obi’s record as Anambra governor, saying the former Labour Party and now Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate failed to confront the state’s erosion crisis and therefore lacks the leadership qualities needed to run the country.
Speaking at an All Progressives Congress rally at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Tinubu urged voters to reject Obi in the 2027 presidential election. He contrasted Obi’s tenure with his own efforts against coastal erosion in Lagos and the work of Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno.
“He’s in one party, they called NDC, who is running for President; he ran away from erosion in Anambra State. He could not confront erosion,” Tinubu said. “I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I confronted the Atlantic Ocean, I tamed it for you. Umo Eno confronted the erosion in Akwa Ibom, and it’s working for you.”
The president argued that Obi’s political movements further exposed a lack of leadership character. He recalled that Obi had once been closely associated with the Peoples Democratic Party before leaving it.
“If a man that once upon a time was a baby of PDP became a father of PDP and because of a little inconvenience he ran away from that party and formed a dangerous aide-de-camp in another party, is that a leadership trait? Is that a leadership character?” Tinubu asked. “They lack leadership character and traits.”
He dismissed Obi’s presidential ambition directly: “And he wants you to vote for him; it’s not for banana. He cannot put a house in order.”
The rally formed part of Tinubu’s visit to Akwa Ibom, during which he inaugurated projects executed by the Umo Eno administration.
