The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has warned opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, against attempting to use the SDP as a platform for personal political battles against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking on Monday night during the celebration of his wife, Queen Lillian Adebayo’s 50th birthday in Abuja, Adebayo made it clear that the SDP would not be used as a “getaway car for a conspiracy and robbery.”
Adebayo, a legal practitioner, reiterated his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the SDP, but emphasized that his party would not serve as a battleground for former allies of Tinubu seeking revenge.
“My party knows I’m contesting in 2027,” he said. “We are listening to talks of a coalition, but the SDP will not be used as a getaway car for a conspiracy we didn’t plan. If the coalition is for the Nigerian people, we are open. But if it’s a gathering of disgruntled Tinubu loyalists trying to borrow our platform for a fight, they should resolve their issues elsewhere.”
He also urged President Tinubu to overhaul Nigeria’s security framework in response to the ongoing violence in Benue and Plateau states.
Also commenting on the coalition efforts, former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore expressed skepticism. While backing the concept of political coalitions, he questioned the credibility of some of the individuals involved.
“I support coalitions and opposition in democracy. But not with people like El-Rufai,” Sowore told journalists. “Once they get what they want, they’ll return to where they came from. Don’t forget, the APC was also a coalition. Many of those pushing this new alliance were part of Buhari’s cabinet. They should be forming a union of ex-officials facing trial, not a political coalition.”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum and Lagos State Chairman, Hon. Femi Olaniyi Ferrari, said the SDP offers a genuine platform for Nigerians seeking solutions to the country’s challenges.
“We understand the suffering Nigerians are facing. We asked for change, but sadly, that change has shortchanged us,” he said.
