The new Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has intensified efforts to bring an end to the lingering Monday sit-at-home order by enhancing security measures across the state.
Despite the official abolition of the sit-at-home directive originally declared in 2021 by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to demand the release of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the practice has persisted, disrupting businesses and economic activities.
In a move to restore normalcy, CP Orutugu, on Monday, toured key locations across the state, including major markets, parks, and junctions, reassuring residents of increased surveillance, intensified patrols, and improved intelligence gathering.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Command, under Orutugu’s leadership, has deployed security personnel to strategic locations as part of efforts to establish security dominance in the state.
“The Commissioner’s commitment to ending the sit-at-home was evident today, February 24, 2025, with a massive deployment of security forces across key areas,” the statement read. “This enhanced security presence includes intensified patrols, strategic deployment of personnel and resources, intelligence gathering, and proactive engagement with the community to deter criminal activities”.
The CP also commended the people of Anambra and the state government for launching Operation Udo Ga Chi, a security initiative aimed at fostering peace and stability. He lauded residents for uniting against threats to public order and reiterated the police force’s determination to employ all necessary legal strategies, both kinetic and non-kinetic to maintain security and stability in the state.
