A political row has erupted in Osun State following the appearance of a controversial billboard in Iwo featuring President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The billboard, which bears the inscription “Continuity of Progress” and is credited to a group called “Osun Leaders of Thought,” was reportedly installed in the early hours of Wednesday. It prominently displays images of both President Tinubu and Governor Adeleke, sparking criticism from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Reacting to the development, the APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, slammed the billboard as a “fraudulent political stunt” aimed at creating a false impression of political alignment between the president and the governor.
“This is the absurd playing of dirty politics taken too far,” Olabisi said in a statement issued on Thursday. “There could not be any acceptable reason for the sponsorship of this fraudulent billboard.”
He further described the display as an “eyesore” and an act of “political heresy,” insisting that the APC had no connection to the campaign. Olabisi alleged that unnamed actors were behind the effort to mislead the public and falsely associate President Tinubu with the PDP-led state government.
“No matter the antics being played, their attempt to dubiously market an unsellable political product has failed,” he added.
In response, the spokesperson to Governor Adeleke, Olawale Rasheed, accused the APC of peddling misinformation and being rattled by the governor’s rising popularity across party lines.
“The opposition is scrambling for what to say. They are confused by the groundswell of support for Governor Adeleke,” Rasheed stated.
He cited recent achievements of the Adeleke administration—such as a cultural tourism partnership with the British Museum and new business ties through the Nigeria-UK Chamber of Commerce—as evidence of growing recognition at home and abroad.
Rasheed added that endorsements from federal institutions and non-governmental organisations reflect the governor’s increasing approval, saying the APC is unable to come to terms with its diminishing political influence.
“The opposition is therefore running amok, ranting over billboards,” he said.
