At least 22 people died and 37 others were injured when two buses collided head-on in southern Niger on Friday night, the country’s transport ministry said Saturday.
Seventeen of the dead were soldiers. The crash occurred about 50 kilometres (35 miles) from the town of Madaoua. One of the buses was carrying military personnel, according to the official ANP news agency.
Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The incident comes amid a government campaign highlighting the dangers of road crashes, which remain common across Niger’s vast road network. In 2025, the country recorded more than 7,000 road accidents that killed over 1,200 people and left more than 4,400 with serious injuries, according to the Nigerien Agency for Road Safety.
Officials cite speeding, drink-driving, and the poor condition of both roads and vehicles as the main contributing factors.
